Dentists are an important part of our lives and if you want to maintain a quality lifestyle then you need to visit a good dentist. The dentists are of various types. Most of the people either go to the family dentists or pediatric dentists for taking care of their kids or newborns. There lies a huge difference between these two. A pediatric dentist is a person who has specialized and trained to handles the dental issues of the children in particular but on the other hand, a family dentist is a person who provides dental treatment from the infants to the elderly of the family. General dentists can be very scary at times and you might end up making your child absolutely scared of the dental treatments. Though we all are a bit scared of the dentists, let not make our children more scared by taking them to a general dentist. A general dentist who has a relationship with your entire family and therefore possesses a good knowledge of the history of the family can be called a family dentist. However, a general dentist can never be as expert as the pediatric dentist.

The differences between pediatric dentists and family dentists

  1. A family dentist is takes care of the dental health of the entire family. While, on the other hand, the pediatric dentists take care of the dental health of the children. The pediatric dentists are trained to make sure that they feel safe and comfortable when they off to a dentists chamber. A pediatric dentist will arrange all the necessary care based on the need of the children. If they think the child needs anaesthesia or sleep for treatment then they do it.
  2. The dental health of the adults and children are very different. The body of the children are continuously changing. They may need different treatments at different times. While the family dentists know the history of the whole family, they are able to treat the patient of any age but on the other hand, as the pediatric dentist has knowledge especially about the children. For this reason, they are well aware of the growth and developments as well as they know what can be a major issue later. This is the reason; if you think the issue with dental health of the children is very complicated it is better to go to a paediatric dentist.
  3. Special needs for the kids are the main concern of the pediatric dentists while the family dentist is concerned about each and every member of the family. Some children are suffering from cerebral palsy, cancer, autism, Down’s syndrome etc. The pediatric dentists are trained in such a way that they are able to take of the children with special needs in a very effective and safe manner. The family dentist office may not be trained or equipped to handle the kids with special needs.

These are things that make the pediatric dentists and family dentists different.
